Fire Department Profile

The Fire Department is made up of four divisions: fire fighting, training, prevention, and administration.

The Department is headed by Fire Chief Charles LeBlanc and assisted by Deputy Chief Conrad Landry, Deputy Chief Tony Nightingale, Captain Robert Landry/Prevention Division, an Administrative Assistant, plus 16 full-time firefighters, 5 casual firefighters and 25 volunteer firefighters.

The Firefighting Division covers six areas of service. In 2008, firefighters responded to 1,287 emergency calls: 319 fire calls, 75 rescue calls, 66 hazardous materials calls, 795 emergency medical service calls, 12 airport rescue calls, and 20 public service calls.  In 2008, the firefighters responded to 82 more emergency calls than in 2007.

There were 25 fires with property losses totalling over $350,000.  Property saved totalled over $5,000,000.  No lives were lost.

Training Division: Members of the fire department attended  92 classroom or hands-on training sessions for a total of 348 training hours.  Training was delivered by the Deputy Chief, the Chief, permanent firefighters, volunteers, and specialized agencies.  Areas of training included administration, fire investigation, EMT recertification, fire fighting skills, rescues, atuomatic sprinklers, emergency measures, natural gas, vehicle extrication and forest fires.

The Prevention Division is responsible for five areas of service and carried out approximately 1050 activities this past year in terms of investigation into the causes and circumstances of fires, inspections and fire safety education.  The Prevention Division was also very busy verifying construction plans for new buildings and also renovation plans for existing buildings.  The activities in this sector increase every year due to the rapid growth of the city.

The Administration Division oversees the technical, operational, and financial aspects of the fire department.

  • Permanent firefighters are assigned various tasks in fire protection and safety, medical calls, prevention visits, data collection for the emergency plan, verification of new fire hydrants, maintain the preventive maintenance of the emergency vehicles and equipment as well as the fire station.
  • The strategic plan continues to be implemented within the department.
  • The new pumper-tanker was put in service in December 2008.
  • The department hired two new permanent firefighters in order to have four firefighters per shift.
  • The installation of the new «Crisys» system program is complete.  This new program of documenting emergency calls is directly linked to the 911 Centre's computers.
  • The new Municipal Emergency Plan was completed in 2008.
  • 50 new coveralls to fight forest fires were purchased this year.
  • 23 «Man Down Alarms» for the portable breathing apparatus' were purchased.
  • The volunteer firefighters completed their Level 1 & 2 Firefighting.

Dieppe’s career and volunteer firefighters are an important asset to our city.  Without them, it would be difficult to maintain our current level of protection.  The city presently has over 20,000 residents on an 80 square kilometre territory.

In November 2004, the firefighters moved into their new fire station located on the site of the former racetrack and measures 1,440 square metres.  The building is named «George Bastarache Building» after its former Fire Chief.
