Commemoration of the Great Upheaval at the Acadian Odyssey Monument
The City of Dieppe, in partnership with the Fédération des associations de familles acadiennes (FAFA), invites the public to a ceremony marking the Great Upheaval on Monday, July 28, at the Acadian Odyssey Monument.
This FAFA-led event is open to all ages and will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The program will feature fiddle music, bell ringing, flower laying, a tap dance recital, and more.
“As the world’s largest Acadian city, it’s important for us to collaborate with community partners to honour this tragic anniversary of the 1755 Acadian expulsion,” says Meggane Cappello, community officer with Dieppe’s heritage department. “The ceremony is also a moment of reflection, and a lead-up to August 15 and the Tintamarre procession, a powerful symbol of Acadian resilience and the failure of the deportation.”
The Acadian Odyssey Monument stands on Champlain Street, along the Petitcodiac River near the A&W restaurant. It commemorates the Acadian resistance that emerged along this river after the Deportation Order of 1755. Led by the Broussard brothers and their allies, a guerrilla campaign was launched to resist deportation efforts.
