Dieppe Unveils the Stories of Eight Women who Shaped the City’s History
To mark Parks and Trails Month, the City of Dieppe unveiled on Saturday the names and biographical panels of eight women celebrated through the Women Trailblazers project.
These women, from diverse backgrounds, are being recognized for their community involvement, leadership, creativity, and contributions to education, the arts, and social justice. Each trail in the Women Trailblazers project features a dedicated interpretive panel that shares the story of one of these remarkable women and honours her legacy.
“These women opened doors for today’s and tomorrow’s generations. By revealing their names, we pay tribute to them and strengthen our collective memory,” said Mayor Yvon Lapierre.
“This groundbreaking initiative is the first of its kind in the province and helps correct the historic underrepresentation of women in public spaces,” added Pauline Cormier, the City’s municipal heritage manager.
The Women Trailblazers project is part of a broader initiative to build an inclusive city that acknowledges its past and honours its women pioneers. It is made possible through a partnership with the Université de Moncton’s Groupe de recherche sur les archives et les femmes (GRAFA).
The event also coincided with National Indigenous Peoples Day. The City was honoured to welcome the family of Dorothy Nye, a respected Elder from the Amlamgog (Fort Folly First Nation) community and one of the province’s first Indigenous high school graduates.
The City of Dieppe acknowledges that this event took place on unceded ancestral Mi’kmaq territory and honours the enduring presence and vital contributions of the Mi’kmaq people to the community.
The following are the eight newly named trails recognizing pioneering women:
- Ada Forbes Trail (health)
- Brenda LeBlanc Trail (political life)
- Dorothy Nye Trail (Indigenous)
- France Daigle Trail (arts and literature)
- Joanne (JoJo) LeBlanc Trail (sports)
- Laure Bradley Trail (intercultural relations)
- Rebecca LeBlanc Trail (environment)
- Shaaron Gionet Trail (entrepreneurship)
