Back to SearchDIEPPE, NB — It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a member of the Dieppe Fire Department, Captain Rheal Leger, on Thursday, January 5, 2023.
Captain Leger passed away from a work-related illness at the age of 57, after serving the Dieppe community for 39 years. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1984, earned a permanent position as a firefighter and emergency medical technician in 1987, and was promoted to Captain in 2014.
“Captain Leger’s passing is a great loss to the Fire Department. His leadership qualities and his support for his colleagues were known and admired by all. He was loved by all, but most of all, he loved his work and serving his community. His passing will leave a great void in the Department and the community,” said Marc Cormier, Fire Chief.
In 2000, Leger was recognized as Canadian firefighter of the year and received a medal of bravery for saving a mother and her two children during a flood while off duty. Dedicated to his work, he was also the recipient of provincial and national long-service medals.
“On behalf of the City of Dieppe, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, children, family and all members of our Fire Department,” said Mayor Yvon Lapierre. “The flags at City Hall and our two fire stations will be flown at half-mast in honour of Captain Leger.”
According to the deceased's last wishes, there will be no viewing at the funeral home. A commemorative ceremony will be held by the municipality, in accordance with the protocol established by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, as well as the wishes of Captain Leger and his family. The details of the ceremony will be announced at a later date.
