Dieppe, New Brunswick, April 28, 2018—Investing in recreational infrastructure helps communities come together and stay active. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick recognize that strategic investments in public infrastructure—including funding for recreational projects—play a key role in supporting dynamic communities while creating good jobs that help grow the middle class.

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard; the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Moncton–Riverview–Dieppe, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honorable Brian Gallant, Premier of New Brunswick; and His Worship Yvon Lapierre, Mayor of Dieppe, today announced over $28.7 million in joint funding for a new community complex in Dieppe. They were joined by Eric Mathieu Doucet, President of the Board for the 9th Jeux de la Francophonie.

The Government of Canada is contributing more than $9.5 million to this project through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects, and the Government of New Brunswick is providing $7.25 million. The City of Dieppe is providing the balance of the funding.

Once completed, the new Dieppe Intergenerational Community Complex will offer two ice rinks, an indoor walking track, and a community kitchen. It will also have meeting spaces for a variety of activities, as well as a greenhouse.

Not only will the new facility promote a healthy, active lifestyle for residents of all ages, it will serve as a training facility for the development of local athletes. Businesses in the area will benefit economically through having additional visitors come to Dieppe for large-scale sporting events.

Quotes

“Investing in recreational infrastructure that reflects the interests of residents is one of the many ways in that the Government of Canada is helping to create healthy and vibrant communities. Public infrastructure projects such as the Dieppe Intergenerational Community Complex help build strong and inclusive communities for all New Brunswickers.”

The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

“The Government of Canada is proud to invest in projects like the Dieppe Intergenerational Community Complex that support the development of athletes, and provide a place where people can stay active and connect with one another. Federal support for major infrastructure projects not only enhances Canadians’ quality of life, but also creates well-paid middle class jobs that help communities grow and prosper.”

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard

“Our government’s multi-year economic growth plan has investments in infrastructure as a key component for creating jobs and stimulating the economy. This investment will help New Brunswick host a successful Games of La Francophonie in 2021, which is important as these games will bring in significant economic spinoffs.”

The Honorable Brian Gallant, Premier of New Brunswick

“As the City of Dieppe continues to grow, our investment will ensure the intergenerational complex will help meet the needs of community groups and residents of all ages.”

The Honorable Roger Melanson, President of the Treasury Board and MLA for Dieppe

“Thanks to the support of the provincial and federal governments, a one-of-a-kind intergenerational community complex will take shape in Dieppe, bringing people together and meeting the needs of the whole community. This project will not only energize the community and well-being of residents, it also has the potential to promote the growth of the downtown area and to become an asset to develop sports and event tourism. This component will generate significant economic growth for many businesses in our community and encourage other businesses to set up shop in our neighborhood.”

Yvon Lapierre, Mayor of the City of Dieppe

“What excellent news! For the 2021 Jeux de la Francophonie internationale, the intergenerational centre will not only host the women’s basketball competitions, it will also help expand the number of activities that will take place in downtown Dieppe.”

Eric Mathieu Doucet, President of the Board for the 9th Jeux de la Francophonie
