GREATER MONCTON – Due to widespread confusion over RecycleSENB’s new residential waste sorting program in the Greater Moncton area, the City of Moncton, City of Dieppe and Town of Riverview would like to bring some clarification on sorting rules.

According to RecycleSENB, here are the golden rules residents should follow:

Blue and green bags only

Bags that are black, orange or any colour other than transparent green or blue will not be picked up.

Grocery bags and kitchen catchers

Grocery bags and kitchen catchers are not acceptable in a transparent green bag (as they cannot be inspected for contamination and are in fact recyclable). The contents of any opaque bag must be emptied into the appropriate bag - the emptied white bags and grocery bags belong in the blue bag.

Glass

All glass, broken or not, belongs in the blue bag. If broken, it should be wrapped in newspaper or in a cardboard box, preferably clearly marked.

The Tri-communities wish to advise residents that blue and green bags containing improperly sorted waste will not be picked up beginning on the following days:

  • City of Dieppe - Tuesday, November 12, 2013
  • Town of Riverview - Tuesday, November 12, 2013
  • City of Moncton - Monday, November 18, 2013

A non-compliance orange sticker will be affixed to the bag indicating the reason for which it was not picked up. Residents are required to remove their waste from the curb, sort it properly, and place it again at the curb the following week.

Also according to RecycleSENB, here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

Sanitary products, Kleenex and paper towels

Tissues and paper towel must be placed in the green bag. As for sanitary products, although not compostable, must go in the green bag.

Diaper genie bags

Diaper Genie Bags come out as a tube of diapers and DO NOT need to be emptied before being put in the green bag.

Dog Waste

The small non-transparent “doggy doo” bags are acceptable in a green bag but ONLY the specialized dog waste bags, NOT grocery bags.

Kitty litter waste and liner

Empty the kitty litter in the green bag and put the liner in the blue bag.

Ashes

Ashes (the residue, including soot, of any fuel or waste after it has been consumed by fire) are hazardous waste and can never be placed in a transparent blue or green bag.  They must be dropped-off at RecycleSENB’s Household Hazardous Waste depot or at a Mobile HHW Unit.

Vacuum bags

Empty the content in the green bag, the bag itself goes in the blue bag.

Aluminium foil

Clean it the best you can, then fold it or ball it up and put it in the blue bag.

Light bulbs

CFLs (Compact fluorescent light bulbs) are hazardous waste and can never be placed in a transparent blue bag.  They must be dropped-off at RecycleSENB’s Household Hazardous Waste depot or at a Mobile HHW Unit. Non-CFL light bulbs are to be wrapped in newspaper, taped and placed in the blue bag.

Newspaper

A few sheets of newspaper in the green bag is ok (ex. to wrap leftover lobster shells, or to clean or contain pet and food waste). Stacks of newspaper should be placed in blue bags.

Water-soaked newspaper vs dry newspaper

Water is not a contaminant. Whether newspaper is soaked with water or not, it should normally be placed in the blue bag. (exception for newspaper in a green bag - see above).

Keurig cups

Keurig cups are non-compostable and must be placed in the blue bag. They can be placed as is in the blue bag.

Cardboard

Cardboard – wet or dry, belongs in the blue bag.

For a more complete listing, please refer to RecycleSENB’s website (recyclesenb.com) or call RecycleSENB at 506.877-1040.
