What to do after heavy snowfall?
Due to the heavy snowfall over the past few days, we are asking residents to follow the guidelines below to ensure your safety and that of your family.
- Never use a generator indoors, in a garage, or in a carport. Place it at least six metres from your home, away from doors and windows.
- Completely clear and de-ice your vehicle (all windows and the roof included) before hitting the road.
- Always keep a safe distance from snow removal equipment.
- Clear your emergency exits to ensure a quick evacuation in case of emergency.
- Clear basement windows, natural gas or propane gas inlets, exhaust vents and ventilation ducts, as well as dryer vents.
Adopt a fire hydrant near your home
After a storm, every second counts in the event of a fire. That is why your help is invaluable: if there is a fire hydrant nearby, take a moment to clear it of snow.
Make sure to clear a one-metre space around it, as well as a pathway leading to it. The municipality will proceed with snow removal around fire hydrants according to priorities established in collaboration with the fire department, but with more than 1,500 hydrants to maintain across the municipality, every shovel stroke counts.
Street parking prohibited the night of February 24 to 25
During snow removal operations, it is best not to park on the street during the day. If you absolutely must park on the street, do so only in permitted areas, parallel to the sidewalk and within 30 centimetres of it. Also fold in your side mirrors. Snow removal trucks and emergency vehicles will then have better access.
Furthermore, during snow removal operations, street parking is prohibited between midnight and 7 a.m. In order to complete the cleanup, the restriction will be in effect tonight, from February 24 to 25. If your vehicle is parked on the street during the restricted period, it may be towed and you may receive a fine.
